THE WEST LONDON STORY FORUMS - DO YOU HAVE A STORY TO TELL?
SCROLL DOWN TO DOWNLOAD THE WEST LONDON STORY REGISTRATION FORM
Calling all creative and artistic people in West London. You have great ideas. You want to see these ideas happen. We want to invite you to tell the stories of West London. This is your chance to develop artistic projects for a local and international audience.
West London Story Forums are free events where artists, creative people, art organisations, venues, festival and event organisers living and working in West London can hear about the West London Story so far, meet each other and shape the way West London Story develops in the future.
The West London Story will grow into West London’s programme of cultural events for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Join us for the West London Story Forums to help shape the stories we tell, and find out about the West London Story research & development bursaries.

The Western Wedge is leading on West London’s Cultural Offer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It aims to work with local talent on an international scale. West London’s cultural programme is called the West London Story.

This may not be a very popular view - but I feel that the activities of the western wedge are being hijacked by consultants, LG officers and employment creation schemes all of which are diluting what used to be a good idea!
I’m not a great supporter of the idea that West London exists as an entity - I don’t see that it has much commnality - but leaving that aside there is a lot that can be done within the geography.
In July 2006 the West London Cultural Strategy was published, and to me it seemed clear, simple and manageable. It said two things:
1. Focus on the two world-renowned assets of Wembley Stadium and Heathrow Airport
2. Focus on 4 artistic areas:
Festivals
Dance
Venues
Public Art
I might want to debate that selection - but the virtue of a clear strategy is that it can direct resources and get everyone behind it.
Now that I have attended the West London Story Forums I no longer know what the strategy is. It appears to be “come up with some good ideas and see if we can get them funded”.
Can we please go back to a clear strategy and then develop a “story2 in the context of that strategy and not in the context of individual pet projects!

Western Wedge and West London Story
There seems to be some confusion about the ‘Western Wedge’ and the ‘West London Story.’
The Western Wedge is a partnership of the arts officers in seven local authorities across west London. Our strategy is based on the 2005 consultation document, ‘Western Wedge: Way Ahead’, which recommended we focus on:
• Capacity building and diversity
• Communication and information systems
• Planning Gain
• Workspaces and Venues

In January 2009 The Western Wedge re-evaluated its terms of reference, and we will post our new terms of reference online soon.
The West London Story is just one part of the Western Wedge’s plans for the next few years. It is the cultural programme of events that the Western Wedge would like to develop to coincide with the Cultural Olympiad that will happen in London in the run up to and during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The West London Story Forums have been designed to hear from the artists and arts organisations working and living in west London, with the aim that the cultural programme of West London Story accurately reflects the interests and inspirations of the artists from this part of London.
